If Conan O’Brien can travel the world with just a carry-on, so can you

Conan O’Brien, the comedian and erstwhile late-night host, has done a lot of jet-setting throughout his career, and has gone to some 20 countries for his travel comedy shows.

Conan’s personal philosophy for smooth travels? Under-pack. He manages to cram everything into a single carry-on — if for no other reason than that it helps him “escape the airport” more quickly. He suggests you do the same by … pretending like you’re Steve Jobs. More on that below.

A few of Conan’s (mostly serious) travel tips:

  • Wear running shoes (almost) everywhere: Conan opts for footwear that does double duty. He always travels with a good pair of black running sneakers. “If you’re squinting, it kind of looks like a shoe,” he said. “If you’re wearing dark pants, no one’s really paying attention, but you can also walk for like 20 miles. You can also go to the gym if you are crazy enough to go to the gym while traveling.”
  • Bring multipurpose clothes: Packing durable, versatile staples and sticking to just a single color palette makes it easier to wear the same outfits for various occasions. “Pretend you’re Steve Jobs,” he suggests. One of his favorite pieces? This super-comfy pair of jeans. “You could do yoga in these, but they just look like regular jeans, and they’re incredibly comfortable.
  • Spend time on the plane wisely: Conan packs his super-portable electric razor — the mini version of this full-size one we recommend — for in-flight shaves. “You use the bathroom on the airplane, you shave up,” he said. “Suddenly, you look like you’re ready for prom.”

It’s a tough thing to get just right: Sometimes, pajamas look a bit too comfy for aviation. But certainly, tight and restrictive jeans can’t be the answer, either. Vanessa Friedman, fashion director and chief fashion critic at The New York Times for more than a decade, has some opinions on the best thing to wear on a flight — including the comfy-but-cool cargo pants she swears by for travel days.
