I know our national legislators are in the middle of a “vote-a-rama” (what an annoying phrase for such a serious thing), but it is very unclear to me what is happening on the Senate floor now. Will there be enough votes to trash Trump’s Big Ugly Bill? Two Republican Senators said they won’t vote for it: Thom Tillis and Rand Paul. Trump can only afford one more no vote; four defectors would kill the bill. At least half a dozen GOP Senators are on the fence right now for various reasons, which are explained here if you want to know in detail. Two potential defectors are Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowsky of Alaska, both have shown an independent streak, but cannot be counted on as no votes. There is a lot of deal making making going on, it’s making my stomach churn. I am impressed with Republican Thom Tillis, who says he is not voting for the bill because it is a betrayal of the American people, that Trump lied in his campaign promise to not cut Medicaid. In a fiery speech on Capitol Hill, he calls Trump’s advisors “amateurs.” The whole thing is nauseating. As we wait on this mess to resolve itself, I thought I would share some drawings to lighten the mood. The New Yorker has been off for a few weeks, and not accepting submissions, so I don’t have any fresh cartoons. But I can show you some drawings that I did to try to come up with ideas. Some of these made it into actual finished cartoons. Doodling is how I best come up with ideas, although it really is a combination of words and pictures that somehow work together to create a cartoon. I hope you enjoyed the little scenes. What is this little girl saying? Maybe she’s saying to her mother, “When will Trump fail?” Have a good Monday, see you tomorrow. Thanks again for being here! |
