| | Good morning, Chicago. It’s the first day of July, and it’s great to be alive, as the late, great DJ Lin Brehmer of WXRT would say. XRT continues to be one of my go-to stations when I listen to the radio in my car because it embraces a panoply of musical genres — curated by humans, not an algorithm. Here at Tribune Opinion, we also believe in a variety of voices. On tap today, we have op-eds from two Cook County officials — State’s Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke on how her office is protecting women’s reproductive rights and Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas with a plea for City Hall to shelve the idea for a grocery tax. And our foreign affairs columnist Daniel DePetris wonders whether Russia and China’s leaders are reconsidering their conclusions about President Donald Trump after the U.S. bombing of Iran. In its first editorial, the Tribune Editorial Board says that Gov. JB Pritzker’s calculus for choosing a new running mate (with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton running for U.S. Senate) will be different this time around, considering Pritzker’s national ambitions. And the board considers the dangers Africans face in practicing Christianity, noting recent eruptions of violence targeting the faithful. Our letter writers today, who include two representatives of Chicago’s restaurant industry, comment on the editorial board’s recent piece on the city’s rising tipped minimum wage. Keep on rockin’ in the free world. We’ll see you tomorrow. — Colleen Kujawa, opinion editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | Many Chicagoans are already struggling with inflation, stagnant wages and rising property taxes. Taxing groceries adds to this burden. | | | In Chicagoland, we will not tolerate criminal actions designed to frighten and prevent women from exercising their reproductive rights. | | | The decision to bomb Iran may prompt Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping to change their conclusions about Trump’s willingness to use the military. | | | Gov. JB Pritzker’s choice of a new running mate is weightier now than it usually is for gubernatorial hopefuls. | | | Nigeria, home to one of Africa’s fastest-growing Christian populations, has also become one of the deadliest places in the world to practice the faith. | | | Chicago restaurants are in crisis — but not because of their employees or the people advocating for them. | | | |
