Quirk of Fate
Philadelphia-based indie publisher Quirk Books has suspended its publishing program and laid off seven employees amid yearslong financial woes. FSG will relaunch North Point Press this fall with former Beacon editor Catherine Tung at the helm. Lauren Wein has been promoted to editor-in-chief at Avid Press, just in time for the imprint’s sixth anniversary. Amid a historic backdrop and political turmoil, librarians’ role in preserving and protecting democracy was top of mind at this year’s ALA Annual Conference in Philadelphia. Plus, we’ve rounded up the biggest books for adults and children out this month. Sarah Hogle’s rom-com You Deserve Each Other is heading to the big screen, per the Hollywood Reporter. For Lit Hub, Maris Kreizman recounts her time on the HarperCollins union picket line. ICv2 talks with Fantagraphics copublisher Eric Reynolds about the unfolding situation at Diamond Comic Distributors and its implications for publishers. The Walrus shines a spotlight on Gaspereau Press, “Canada’s most stubborn publisher.” New York Times columnist Carlos Lozada pays tribute to John Jakes’s multigenerational novels of American life. And former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter has died at 73.
