Good afternoon. It’s Tuesday, July 1.

In today's newsletter:

  • The minimum wage in Alaska rose to $13 today and the state’s first sick leave requirement went into effect. Some business owners said they foresee higher consumer prices and reduced hiring as a result.

  • Both of Alaska’s U.S. senators voted in favor of a budget reconciliation bill that includes many of President Donald Trump’s priorities, including extending tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the wealthy and cutting Medicaid and food assistance.

  • Alaska lawmakers are moving toward issuing subpoenas related to an audit of oil and gas taxes collected by Gov. Mike Dunleavy's administration, after the governor vetoed a bill that would have clarified the role of the legislative auditor.

So just what are the orcas doing, offering food to people? You can learn more here.
