A cat named Kiki spends her weekdays walking 10-year-old Sonny Scott and his friends to Kelvindale Primary in Glasgow, Scotland, then waiting for them on the playground until school is out for the day. Her sweet gesture earned Kiki a spot on the shortlist for Britain's National Cat Awards. "She's really sociable," owner Michelle Scott said to STV News. "She really loves children and has done so from the moment we got her."

Every senior at Swanville High School who applies for a scholarship for post-secondary education gets one, courtesy of their neighbors. Since 1987, residents of Swanville, Minnesota, have raised money for the graduates by selling flowers, holding raffles and hosting chili cook-offs. In 1987, the average scholarship was $166. Today, it's $5,142. "It's this community saying, 'Go be great,'" student Zach Gapinski told KARE 11. "'Go do something cool and make a difference in the world.'"

A once fearsome curse could be a blessing

Using LED lights to get scallops to jump into pots is "changing the game" for the fishing industry, said The Times of London. Dubbed the "disco scallops" method, this new "cruelty-free" approach to catching the bivalve mollusks eliminates the need for "destructive" bottom trawling that damages the ocean floor. The underwater LEDs appear to "highlight" phytoplankton, the main food source of scallops, encouraging them to "dance" into the trap.

The newest member of the Philadelphia Phillies is Tugger, a 10-week-old service dog in training. The team is sponsoring the yellow lab, which will spend the next two years working with disabled veterans to learn how to assist them. Once he finishes training, the goal is to match Tugger with a veteran in need. The pup is named after late Phillies relief pitcher Tug McGraw and is the second service dog sponsored by the team.
