One Wirecutter journalist set out to find the very best Crocs

When writer Alexander Aciman first started to feel a deep, agonizing pressure in his foot, his podiatrist assigned him a long list of recovery to-dos: physical therapy, lifestyle changes, pain management, and … Crocs.

Rather than plodding around barefoot across hardwood floors or running to the store in firm-soled boots, Alexander would need to rely on the famously comfortable but polarizing sandals to support his low-arched feet.

“But as I tried them on, a new problem immediately presented itself,” Alexander writes. “Crocs are not always the most attractive shoes. And as a man who loves footwear, the thought of incorporating Crocs into outfits that still looked and felt like me boggled my mind.”

So he set out to find the best-looking options, ordering seven styles among the brand’s dozens of offerings, and rotating between them over the course of several weeks. He sported them for everything from daily neighborhood jaunts to cooking in the kitchen. And he ranked all of the Crocs by support, comfort, and, yes … style.

One last thing: Alexander’s favorite shirt, 10 years running

Meet the shirt that, for nearly a decade, Alexander reached for to complete almost every outfit. He wore it until the fabric at the elbows became sheer and the hems started to unfurl — and he ultimately had to buy a replacement (of the same shirt).

And, indeed, he was onto something: This crisp chambray button-down is delightfully versatile. It can be worn tucked or untucked, in summer and in winter, under a tweed blazer, or as a layer over a T-shirt. As Alexander puts it: “It can be, at the same time, both Brooks Brothers and Levi Strauss.”
