Thanks to the over four thousand of you who joined Katie Phang and me on a Sunday morning to discuss law, politics, and what we can all be doing, especially in the area of voting, to protect our democracy right now. If you haven’t already downloaded the Substack app, click the link below. If you’re subscribed to Civil Discourse, you’ll get a notification when I go live. That works for both paid and free subscriptions because we’re committed to giving everyone access to information so we can all be what my friend Katie appropriately calls “high information voters.” Among the important issues we discussed this morning was the importance of preparing now for the work we will have to do to protect the 2026 election. Trump and MAGA will be crying voter fraud, yet again, but we all know the real issue will be voter suppression—the effort to keep eligible voters from participating in the election. In our Substack Live, we discussed some steps you can take right now. A big one is being aware of the need to have identification and proof of citizenship in case either the SAVE Act or Trump’s reprehensible EO on voting sticks. There are groups like Voteriders that help people get the ID they need to vote in their state. Their work will be increasingly important, so I encourage you to support them if you can and rely on their resources when you need them. My friend Laura W. Brill who runs The Civics Center does an amazing job of helping high school kids register as soon as they are eligible to, running programs designed to educate them about their rights—I know she’d appreciate your support or volunteer help with the work! A great place to start, if you’re just getting involved, is your local League of Women Voters. (They welcome men, too, of course.) Their website is full of concrete steps you can take to protect our elections and get involved in the important issues at hand. Most of all, Katie and I want you to understand that you matter, your voice and your views are important. MAGA wants us to believe there won’t be free and fair elections in 2026 because they’ve seen us in action, and they know that when we all work together, we can beat them. They want us to give in in advance. Let’s resist! We face tough times, and I’m not here to pretend it will be easy. But we can do this. Let’s get to work. We’re in this together, Joyce |
