This Project Will:
- Replace the deteriorated roadway and underlying bridge deck bridge
- Widen the 6' sidewalks to 10' paths on both sides of the bridge
- Move some overhead utilities to below the street scape
- Replace the bridge facade with public art component
The project will also implement improvements to the intersection of South Glebe Road and Arlington Ridge Road.
Rebuilding One Side At a Time
The bridge will be reconstructed in two halves, "hot dog bun" style. Crews will first reconstruct the southbound side of the bridge, and all vehicle and sidewalk traffic will move to the northbound lanes. After crews take down select utilities poles adjacent to the bridge, they will reopen the southbound half for all traffic, and close the northbound half for reconstruction.
What to Expect During Construction
- Traffic will likely slow down on the bridge and adjacent intersections while travel lanes are narrowed.
- The Four Mile Run Trail under the Arlington side of the bridge will close during demolition work taking place on each side of the bridge, and at other times as needed by the project, for trail user and crew safety
- A detour between the trail and South Glebe Road will be available via South Lang Street
- Scaffolding will keep the underpass neat and passable for trail users when it's open
