The AI boom goes on: Sales at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. jumped 39% in the June quarter, surprising analysts, and suggesting no slowdown in the post-ChatGPT boom in artificial intelligence spending.

Robotaxi plans: Tesla aims to expand its driverless taxi service to California and Arizona after last month’s limited rollout in Austin. 

Hack arrests: Three teenage boys and a 20-year-old woman were arrested in the UK and accused of hacking, blackmail and other crimes in connection with April cyberattacks on retailers including Marks & Spencer.

Varda Space Industries raised $187 million in a funding round that will help it launch more spacecraft into orbit. The company builds devices that process pharmaceutical materials in space and returns them to Earth. The lack of gravity allows for drug combinations that wouldn’t be possible to manufacture on the ground.

Amazon’s Prime Day event got off to a struggling start this week, although analysts still expect big numbers when the final sales are tallied, Spencer Soper reports in today’s Tech In Depth. Already, however, surveys show that Amazon is having a bit more trouble holding onto its best customers than in the past. Before they buy, Prime shoppers are comparing prices at other major retailers, such as Walmart and Target, which have created competing online sales events, he reports.

For a while earlier this year it looked like Congress would bar US state lawmakers from regulating artificial intelligence in favor of a national approach. But that effort was defeated and lawmakers and state executives from California to New York are once again drafting rules to rein in the potential harms from the emerging technology, Shirin Ghaffary writes in this week’s Q&AI. “A large majority of people want to see AI developed and produce benefits, and they want to get ahead of the risks,” California state Senator Scott Wiener, who has drafted AI legislation, told Ghaffary in an interview.
