How to build a staple wardrobe, according to a fashion designer

Jenna Lyons wears, as she told us recently, the same thing every day. And whether you’re familiar with her from her stint on The Real Housewives of New York City or as the former president and executive creative director of J.Crew, you know that she’s not being hyperbolic.

Her advice for creating a consistently polished personal style is to invest in versatile staples, rather than in outfits you’ll only wear a handful of times. Happily, Lyons is also anything but a gatekeeper. She told us what she likes, why it works for her, and where to get it yourself. Enjoy.

  • Her perfect T-shirt: This tee is heavier than most, with longer sleeves, a boxy shape, and a slightly shorter but not quite cropped length. She likes the close-fitting neckline, too, which allows her necklace to sit just outside of the shirt.
  • Old-school loafers worth the splurge: “If you’re going to buy a pair of loafers, buy a pair of really good ones and break them in,” Lyons suggested. A classic brand and style, these (currently on-sale!) penny loafers are hand-stitched and feature a leather sole, which can be resoled and worn for years.
  • A beautiful cashmere sweater vest: Lyons loves this versatile, oversized, super-soft vest. You can layer it over T-shirts, button-ups … the list goes on.

One last thing: The pets that scanned Prime Day deals with us

NYT Wirecutter

It has been a long week. We’ve been scouring the internet for days on end to weed out only the really good deals. (Fun fact: Just under 1% of the 80,000-plus we reviewed made the cut.) Shout out to all the very cute Wirecutter pets that kept us company — and lovingly, not-so-subtly, encouraged us to take breaks.
