Chicago Tribune Opinion

Thursday, July 17, 2025

Good morning.

Looking forward to some cool, dry air today after our multiday sweatfest.

The editorial board has two offerings. First is a warning on an effort by a substantial slice of Wall Street to get permission from regulators and policymakers in Washington to include private-equity and private-credit funds in your 401(k) plan. We've got serious concerns.

Second, the board bemoans the increasingly high cost of simply running for mayor in suburbs throughout the area. It's not a healthy trend for local politics.

A trio of civic leaders echoes criticisms the edit board made last month about a bill on Gov. JB Pritzker's desk that would sweeten pensions for some Chicago cops and firefighters. They call on Pritzker to veto the measure, even though it passed unanimously.

Willie Wilson, a regular contributor, writes on a subject near to his heart: using state and municipal contracting to further Black- and Hispanic-owned businesses.

And, with our mail starting to pile up, we've got readers' letters. Guess what — or I should say who — is on your minds? His name rhymes with Jump.

I'm jumping now, but we'll be back tomorrow. Have a great, less sweaty day!

— Steve Daniels, editorial board member
