TOP OF THE AGENDA | Israel levelling thousands of Gaza civilian buildings in controlled demolitions |
| | The former homes of tens of thousands of people have been destroyed. Credit: BBC | Israel has demolished thousands of buildings across Gaza since it withdrew from a ceasefire with Hamas in March, with entire towns and suburbs levelled, satellite images analysed by BBC Verify and experts show. The scale of the destruction can be seen in the city of Rafah. Other areas which appear to have avoided heavy damage during earlier bombardments have also been largely destroyed. Several human rights lawyers have suggested the campaign could amount to war crimes. A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said it operated in accordance with international law, that Hamas concealed "military assets" in civilian areas, and that the "destruction of property is only performed when an imperative military necessity is demanded". |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Relentless immigration raids are changing California's way of life |
| | | The raids have triggered a fierce backlash from activists. Credit: Getty Images | While many Americans support President Donald Trump's tough immigration policies, in Southern California, the impact of a month of immigration raids is noticeable. The area is home to an estimated 1.4 million undocumented immigrants, many of who have been forced into hiding. In parks and neighbourhoods once bustling with shoppers, foot traffic, music and street vendors, the absence of familiar sounds is eerie, while many areas have cancelled public summer events, such as Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. |
