How I Made Three Cats Happy
From Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from My Cat
By Helen Krasner

People who love cats have some of the biggest hearts around.
~Susan Easterly

I have always been an impulsive person, and it’s gotten me into a lot of trouble in the past. But, somehow, I’ve never changed. So, I bought my Persian kitten, Shireen, completely on impulse. I hadn’t planned to acquire another cat, as my Snoopy seemed entirely happy on her own. But Shireen was a gorgeous, longhaired kitten, just three months old, with the cutest little flat face. She was the last of the litter, and the breeder had reduced the price substantially. I’m a sucker for a bargain, and I decided to take her home. After all, I reasoned, I had often had a multi-cat family in the past. Surely, Snoopy would like Shireen as much as I did.

I was delighted to find that Shireen and Snoopy got on well almost immediately. The breeder had said that Shireen had always lived with other cats and really liked being with them. But then, just three weeks later, Snoopy was killed on the road outside my house. I never learned how it happened. (Keep reading)

Pet Fire Safety Day is celebrated annually on July 15th. Do you know what to do in case of a fire? Here a few tips on keeping your pets safe:

  1. Check with your local volunteer firehouse to see if they offer a free Pet Fire Safety Window Cling. First responders will see this and know to look out for any pets inside.
  2. Have an evacuation plan and practice it. If you have children all the more reason to hold an annual drill.
  3. Microchipping your pets for an additional layer of identification that is not at risk of falling off or being destroyed. Make sure your contact information is up to date in your microchip provider’s registry.
  4. Talk to a neighbor and share emergency plans. Know that if you need help, someone close could help save lives.
