Dear readers,
This has been a difficult week for NPR. In an unprecedented action, the Senate and House have both voted to claw back $1.1 billion in previously promised government funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which then goes to PBS, NPR and -- most of all -- NPR's member stations. The same vote also cut about $7 billion in previously allocated foreign aid.
NPR's CEO, Katherine Mayer, has shared her thoughts about the impact.
CNN reports on the death in a hit-and-run accident in India of Fauja Singh at age 114, often described as the "world’s oldest marathon runner." He said of his love for the sport: "Running showed me kindness and brought me back to life by making me forget all my traumas and sorrows."
Fielding a team -- the Leopardesses -- at this year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations "has taken on a deeper meaning for players and supporters of DR Congo" in the wake of the country's "devastating" conflict, the BBC writes.
