Good afternoon. It’s Thursday, July 24.

In today's newsletter:

  • Alaska legislators looking to override some of Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s vetoes received a boost with news of a lawmaker’s plan to return from Europe for a special session set to begin next month.

  • Following a fatal shooting outside the Gaslight Lounge in downtown Anchorage over the weekend, police will increase patrols and enact a brief, bar-break street closure along a block of West Fourth Avenue.

  • The day after a 67-year-old woman was mauled by a bear in a popular Anchorage hiking area, officials said they do not yet have enough information about the incident to search for the animal.

Where will the next big hurricane hit? The answer may lie with an unexpected source: sharks. Researchers are enlisting sharks as mobile marine monitors, equipping them with sensors that may help predict the power and path of Atlantic hurricanes.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly sunny today with a high around 71 degrees, though the forecast calls for increasing clouds and a chance of rain tonight. Looking ahead, Friday will be rainy, but we should see at least partly sunny skies over the weekend, with daytime highs in the low to mid-70s.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
