If your child is tired of you taking their picture, hand over your phone or camera and encourage them to take a shot of flowers, trees, or wildlife, and enter it in The Week Junior’s Nature Photo Contest. The deadline is July 28! There is one entry form for 8- to 10-year-olds and another entry form for 11- to 14-year-olds. Winning entries will be featured in a future issue of the magazine. In the meantime, here are three questions to get fun conversations going with your family. —Joey Bartolomeo, Senior Editor
1. The largest piece of rock from Mars that has ever been found on Earth sold at auction for $5.3 million. The 54-pound meteorite traveled 140 million miles before landing in the Sahara Desert in Africa, where it was found in 2023. If you could own a piece of a planet, which one would you want it to be from?
2. In the new movie Superman, the hero adopts a dog named Krypto. After the film opened in July, online searches for “adopt a dog near me” increased 513%. Although Krypto is computer-generated, he is based on director James Gunn’s real-life rescue dog, Ozu, who is “fairly often, a very good boy,” Gunn said. What type of superpower would you give your own pet or one that you know?
3. Baths date back thousands of years, though showers came about more recently. Some people say a bath at night helps them unwind and sleep soundly, while others swear by a shower to wake them up in the morning. A shower is quick and efficient, but a good soak in a bath is a special occasion. What do you think? Are baths better than showers? Your child can vote in our big debate!
