The other day I took the metro to work. When I exited the station to walk up the street to NPR, I saw a man lying flat on the sidewalk -- and two young men who'd gotten off their bicycles and were kneeling by his side. One of them was cradling the man's head. The man was barefoot so it seemed he was living on the street.
"Is there anything I can do?" I asked. One of the young men said they'd seen this fellow sprawled out on a hot day and seemingly unwell. They called an ambulance. And they were waiting with him and talking with him until the vehicle arrived.
I was so touched by their act of kindness. All I could think to say was "thank you." Thank you for caring for this stranger. And thank you for reminding me that in a world full of conflict and tension, it's important to remember that we all have the capacity to do good.
