BATTING LEADOFF

The Red Sox have won 21 of the 30 games Garrett Crochet has started, the latest a much-needed 6-4 victory against the Yankees on Sunday night at Fenway Park.

The lefthander was not necessarily at his best, allowing three runs on five hits after being staked to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. But he struck out 12 and gave the Sox what they needed to stop a three-game losing streak and avoid a series sweep.

Style points and statistics don’t matter against the Yankees. Just find a way to beat them and Crochet did that.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Red Sox owned the rivalry with the Yankees this year, finishing 9-4 in the season series. With two weeks remaining, the teams are done with each other. Maybe. Tim Healey has the game story.

RETURN TO FORM: Aroldis Chapman had been dealing with a slight reduction in fastball velocity this month. But the closer clinched Sunday night's win — his 30th save of the season — with a 101.5-mile-per-hour sinker to induce a strikeout of José Caballero. Tim Healey has more in the notebook.

CATCHING ON: There aren’t many places for Alex Cora to turn to get the lineup moving. But one area that has offered him some flexibility is at catcher, where an evolving partnership between Connor Wong and Carlos Narváez has solidified one of the team’s bigger question marks when the season began. Tara Sullivan has more on the duo.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: Cora has long used his pregame press conferences as a way to send messages to his players, the fan base, and occasionally the front office. He did so again this weekend to emphasize that talk of the playoffs is premature. Peter Abraham has more from the manager.

SEARCHING FOR A GM: For close to two years, ever since the Red Sox hired Craig Breslow as chief baseball officer, they have operated without a general manager as his clear second-in-command. That is about to change, writes Tim Healey.

HAPPY RETURN: Sunday night's game served as a homecoming of sorts for Scott Gustafson, who serves as coordinating producer of all levels of ESPN’s baseball coverage. Chad Finn has more on the Marshfield native who is a few months from his 25th anniversary at ESPN and has been part of its baseball coverage for the last 15 years.

WORST OF THE WORST: Teoscar Hernández has a 0.7 bWAR and has been a below-average hitter and fielder. He’s also costing the Dodgers $17.6 million, although $7.5 million of that is deferred. Hernández is not alone on the Anti-All-Star team. Peter Abraham takes a look at baseball’s biggest underachievers this season.
