THE RESONANCE REPORT

Hey there (unknown)!

Here we are with another Resonance Report!

As I was preparing this newsletter, my computer lost internet access. After spending half an hour trying to fix it from my desktop and diagnose the issue with software remedies I realised I had forgotten the cardinal rule of I.T.

‘Have you tried turning it off and on again?’

Off to the router I went. Flicked the switch off and on. 5 minutes later I was again with a working connection.

That reminds me of the issues we can face when working on music in a DAW or with an outboard studio rig. Silence when there should be sound, frequency issues where there shouldn’t be etc.

Before you dive into super technical trouble shooting have you checked for the simple solution first?

Occam’s Razor can be very useful!

Anyway let’s dive into some super useful production gems!

1 -> Tip Of The Biweek

Reverb is a great way of adding space to a mix but can quickly get out of hand and make your music sound washed out and muddy if you apply it to lots of individual channels. Instead set up three busses for short, medium, long reverb and send channels to those. This saves on CPU usage, puts all sounds in the same three spaces and will make your mix much cleaner!

2 -> Get Creative With Synth Layering!

So you have been making great synth sounds and you want to use them in your music but they feel a bit plain or thin when used. Well here is a fantastic video showcasing different synth layering tricks that can really glue instrumentation together:

Watch as SynthHacker showcases ten very powerful synth layering ideas  to elevate your tunes to the next level!

3 -> Why You Should Bounce Everything!

You have a great song idea underway but you want to take it to the next level. Well the export/bounce feature in your DAW is not just for rendering out a final mix. It can be used in extremely creative musical ways. Here is a video exploring the power of bounce in tune writing:

In this video Like It Or Not showcases using the export/bounce function in a way that you might not have considered. Get this knowledge in your memory banks now!

4 -> Our Latest Remake

This weeks sound showcase is the iconic lead synth guitar from 'ATB - 9PM (Till I Come)'

The lead pluck synthesizer in ATB’s “9 PM (Till I Come)” features a distinctive pitch-bent guitar-like sound created using the Roland JD-990’s “meowing guitar” preset. This sound, central to the track’s trance identity, employs a smooth pitch bend, giving it a gliding, vocal-like quality. The melody begins prominently at 0:30, driving the song’s iconic hook with its bright, resonant timbre.
