Chicago Tribune Opinion

Thursday, October 9, 2025

Good morning.

Willie Wilson, who is a regular contributor and familiar to many of you, has a piece today on one of his regular themes — the treatment of Black Chicagoans and what he sees as a stealth return to the days of Jim Crow. But check out his bombshell towards the end of the piece regarding Dick Durbin and what Wilson believes Illinois' senior senator did to prevent him from testifying in Washington on crime in Chicago.

As the drama over the National Guard in Chicago continues to play out and we await a federal judge's ruling as early as today on the legality of Trump's call-up of the Texas Guard, we have a thought-provoking op-ed from an assistant law professor on past precedents in this part of the law and whether they're at risk due to judicial timidity.

The editorial board looks at an important local issue — whether the Chicago High School for the Arts has a future following the news that the school 's board won't extend its contract with Chicago Public Schools.

And a second editorial ponders Bari Weiss' remarkable rise to become editor-in-chief of CBS News. We'll see what becomes of this unorthodox personnel move, but on paper at least, the journalistic principles Weiss has laid out should cause no objections.

We're publishing a full page of readers' letters today and not surprisingly we 're getting a lot of them. Many are full of passion and anguish. We're all in this together, and we're proud to serve as a gathering place for our readers to talk to us, each other, and all of you.

— Steve Daniels, editorial board member
