| | | | | Good morning, Chicago. The Supreme Court will hear arguments today on the president’s authority to impose his controversial tariffs. After a negative Canadian TV ad featuring Ronald Reagan aired, Donald Trump raised tariffs on our neighbor to the north and claimed that the former conservative president “loved tariffs.” Our columnist Steve Chapman responds to this moment of revisionist history and lays out how different Trump and Reagan are on trade and immigration policy. Operation Midway Blitz has been playing out in Chicagoland since September, and today in commentary, we have two op-eds that look ahead at what is next for the city. Sen. Graciela Guzman and an immigration activist write that what is happening in Chicago is more than just blowing whistles: It's a community-led movement. And two Little Village natives lay out how fear around immigration raids is hurting Latino businesses across the city and how leaders should respond. U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia announced his retirement hours before the filing deadline for the 2026 election, and his chief of staff, Patty Garcia, was one of the only candidates able to file in time for the primary race to succeed him. The Tribune Editorial Board in its first piece today calls out this maneuver that has been used by other politicians in Illinois. The board also applauds Rahm Emanuel’s work to involve men in the fight against domestic violence. Our readers are concerned about the new transit bill that passed in Springfield last week and how it will impact suburbanites and downstaters. Thanks for reading. — Grace Miserocchi, opinion editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | | | Ronald Reagan could not have differed more from Trump on international trade or relations with Canada and Mexico. | | | | | In Chicago a trifecta has emerged to fight ICE: grassroots mobilization, judicial accountability and united local governments. | | | | | Every immigration raid causes a wave of fear. This results in empty tables and darkened windows across Chicago’s Latino business districts. | | | | | U.S. Rep. Chuy Garcia’s maneuver to bequeath his seat to his chief of staff is profoundly lamentable. | | | | | Emanuel acknowledges that addressing domestic violence will take whole families. That means buy-in from men. | | | | | If fewer people are riding trains and buses, do we need as many train and bus routes and the people involved in servicing those routes? | | | | | Scott Stantis | |
