From the desk of Christy Page
November is a month for giving thanks—thanks for the wonderful bounty our gardens have provided all year long (and may still be offering for the lucky few). It’s also the time to bring a little of that life indoors. Whether you’re starting an indoor garden, dreaming of hydroponics, experimenting with herbs, or simply resting while planning for spring, we have you covered. |
At Food Gardening Magazine, we’re embracing it all this month. The outdoor garden is winding down, frost has settled in for the season, and we’re tucking our beds under winter blankets of mulch and leaves. But even as the earth rests, our kitchen windowsills are waking up. Join us as we explore herb gardening and the top herbs for 2026, dig into whether garlic can protect your plants, and uncover the truth about pear pollination. We’re even sharing a 7-day meal planner to help you make the most of those freshly grown herbs!

At GreenPrints, November is all about gratitude. Don Nicholas celebrates the harvest season in Pumpkins, Pilgrims, and a Very Good Harvest, taking us back to the very first Thanksgiving celebration. In Thanksgiving, Pat Stone shares his reflections on this wonderful holiday—and I couldn’t agree more with his belief that it is “plants on which we depend.” We’re also shining a light on potatoes, Sun Gold tomatoes, grapefruit, and basil. Did you know that a single medium potato provides nearly half your daily vitamin C needs?

Our Garden to Table Recipe Collection celebrates Thanksgiving flavors and traditions with dishes that are both nostalgic and inspired. From a gourmet twist on the classic green bean casserole to a zesty orange cranberry relish that brings a taste of California sunshine to a New England table, these recipes are filled with heart and flavor. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a Thanksgiving novice, I hope they bring warmth and joy to your holiday table.

Fall is my favorite time of year—the crisp air, colorful leaves, and cozy sweaters are reason enough to celebrate. But the real highlight? Our annual family apple-picking adventure. And with a bushel (or three) of apples, the question becomes: what to make first? We’ve got five easy apple recipes for every craving—from breakfast to dessert. Apple Cinnamon Chia Pudding, Apple Overnight Oats, or my personal pick, the Rustic Apple and Cheddar Galette.

This month also brings a special Green Perspectives Story Collection featuring the beloved works of Diana Wells. A long-time GreenPrints contributor, Diana blends botanical fact with personal anecdote, literary insight, and just enough mischief to remind us that gardening is never quite what we expect. Her stories capture the magic and mystery of plants, people, and their endlessly fascinating connections.

November reminds us that gardening isn’t just about what grows in the ground—it’s about adapting, experimenting, and staying curious through every season. Whether you’re drying herbs, building a hydroponic system, or baking your way through a basket of apples, this month is about honoring the harvest and preparing for what’s next.
Happy Gardening!
