Back in the day, getting things done was simple. If you were building a car, you had an assembly line. Every process was out in the open. If you wanted to check on things, you could just walk up to Fred and say, "What's up, Fred?"

You knew what was happening because you could see it happening.

Today that's not so easy, because everything is digital, and you can't exactly walk up to a server or an app and strike up a conversation. So the question is, in today's digital world, how do we know what's happening?

We could get super geeky super quickly, but in a nutshell: you need to see across all your digital systems and make sense of all that noise they're making, so you can understand and act upon what your complex data is telling you.
