Judge: Purdue Pharma opioid settlement poised for approval
US Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane said he will approve a settlement with OxyContin-maker Purdue Pharma in which members of the Sackler family will pay as much as $7 billion to resolve claims stemming from the opioid crisis, with the Sacklers relinquishing ownership of Purdue. The settlement supplants a prior version that the US Supreme Court struck down, ruling that Sackler family members would be improperly shielded from future opioid-related litigation.

Louvre heist highlights risks of self-insurance
The $100 million jewelry heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris has highlighted the risks of self-insuring valuable assets. The French government, which owns the museum, self-insures because private coverage for the priceless collection would be prohibitively expensive. "The government relied on security measures to safeguard the jewels while self-insuring," says Patricia Sheridan, managing director of Burns & Wilcox. "Without insurance, the cost to recover from a theft can definitely be high, which can be detrimental to the point of bankruptcy."

Workers' comp medical costs rise after years of stability
Medical costs per workers' compensation claim have begun to rise after a period of stability, according to a Workers Compensation Research Institute report. The report, which examines 18 states, notes a 5% increase in California, a 7% increase in Delaware, a 14% increase in Pennsylvania and a 6% increase in Wisconsin.

Fed's Logan signals opposition to Dec. rate cut
Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan has signaled she would oppose a rate cut in December, citing concerns about inflation remaining above the Fed's 2% target. "Until I see convincing evidence that we are headed all the way back to our 2% target, I really do think modestly restrictive policy is appropriate," Logan said at an energy conference.
