President Donald Trump is redeploying federal forces to enhance border security and increase deportations as part of his mass deportation effort. This includes Coast Guard patrols on the Rio Grande, Border Patrol agents in cities such as Charlotte, N.C., and Chicago and a naval presence in the Caribbean. While daily arrests and deportations have risen, they still fall short of the administration's goal of 3,000 removals a day, prompting internal reassignments and leadership changes within immigration agencies.

Pentagon has short window to advance key programs
Congress has voted to reopen the government, maintaining budget levels until Jan. 30 and giving the Pentagon an 11-week window to advance key initiatives before the next budget showdown. Lawmakers push to save Navy Reserve Centers from Senate cuts
A bipartisan group of more than a dozen House members is advocating for the preservation of Navy Reserve Centers following a Senate proposal to eliminate over 100 facilities nationwide as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. The Senate Armed Services Committee has labeled the centers as wasteful and ineffective, but House members argue that their closure would decrease military readiness and diminish the Navy's national presence.

Veteran finds new mission, purpose in ironwork
