Figuring out whether self-employed people can deduct tips
Self-employed individuals will be allowed to claim income-tax deductions for tips in some instances, according to a federal law that allows workers in specific industries to write off as much as $25,000 for tips. However, only tips that are reported on three forms are eligible for self-employed people: Form 1099-NEC, Form 1099-MISC or Form 1099-K. Exclusions include individuals whose modified adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000 or $300,000 for joint filers.
