Kevin Brown, broker-owner of Better Homes Realty Rockridge in Oakland, Calif., understands the intergenerational benefits of owning a home better than most. Brown is guided by the lessons passed down through previous generations, hampered by systemic racism: the need to pursue higher education, develop a fierce work ethic and the importance of the security afforded through property ownership. Brown harnessed homeownership as a tool to unlock opportunity for years to come. He plans to bring that same determination to serve National Association of REALTORS® members.

Baby boomers are struggling to downsize despite owning a significant share of the U.S. housing market, mainly because of low-interest mortgages secured in the early 2020s. This "golden handcuffs" effect has led to a shortage of available homes, especially in high-cost areas, hindering younger generations' ability to buy homes. Rising maintenance costs and property taxes further discourage boomers from moving.

Pittsburgh stands out for its exceptional housing affordability among large U.S. cities, with a median home price of $250,000—over $150,000 less than the national median as of late 2025, according to Realtor.com.
