From the Mail Bag: Can You Explain the Bus Stops?

Columbia Pike Bus Pad Diagram

Question: I see that some bus stops don't have bus pull-over lanes anymore. How will that work when buses are running there?

Answer: Buses will move faster!

One of the key components of the Columbia Pike Multimodal Street Improvement project (also known as Columbia Pike Forward), is making the street environment better for bus travel in addition to private cars.

Columbia Pike is one of the most ridden bus corridors in the County, and these improvements will help serve passengers board and get off the bus in a more efficient way.

Here are some ways the new bus stop configurations will help improve bus operations:

  • Realigned and straightened lanes for buses to stop and go quickly, without losing time weaving in and out of traffic
  • Concrete bus pads in the road (the white rectangles) to better withstand the weight of buses as they stop to let passengers on and off
  • Tactile strips along the curb to help passengers position themselves on the stop
  • Widened sidewalks (in some locations) make it easier for passengers to access the stops, and lay the groundwork for brand new shelters as part of the Transit Stations project
