For organisations in government, knowing when to use consultants, and ensuring they are brought in when optimal, can be a driver for greater efficiency and productivity and for optimising the use of public money.
Used well, consultants provide specialist expertise in areas of unpredictable demand, and 86% of respondents to a NAO survey found them to bring valuable contributions. However, consultants can be more expensive and may lack the detailed organisational knowledge of permanent staff. Departments need to consider carefully when to use consultants.
