Kicking off

The Patriots had largely skirted the injury bug - until now.

Within a span of two weeks, the Patriots have had to put star defensive lineman Milton Williams on IR, while also losing two starters on the offensive line.

Both left tackle Will Campbell (knee) and Jared Wilson (ankle) were taken off on carts during the Patriots win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Wilson suffered a high ankle sprain and isn't likely to play in Monday Night's game against the New York Giants.

Campbell, meanwhile, definitely won't be playing against the Giants, and will be out the next four games after being placed on IR. He is reportedly dealing with an MCL sprain.

Add in injuries to defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga (chest) and special teams ace Brenden Schooler (ankle), and the Patriots are going to be up against it against the Giants, prior to having a much-needed bye.

With a 10-2 record, and five games remaining, the Patriots are still in good shape for making the postseason.

They just can't afford to go into a tailspin down the stretch. They aren't a team that's rife with depth, but the backups - Vederian Lowe, Ben Brown - are going to have to hold the fort on the left side of the line.

The Giants are first up, and after the bye, it'll be Buffalo and Baltimore.

“It’s really next man mentality, next man up,” Lowe said earlier in the week. “I’m ready to go. Go in there, produce and do my job. That’s what coach says each and every week, prepare like you’re a starter, no matter what your role is. Everyone has a role, and you always have to prepare to play. Seeing that, I really feel for Will. He works really hard. He grinds. He’s a great player. I have to be ready to go in there and perform.”

The Giants have a pretty fierce pass rush, led by Brian Burns, whose 13 sacks are second to Cleveland's Myles Garrett.

No doubt offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will scheme in help for Lowe as needed. But it's a critical stretch for the Patriots, who need to continue to do what they do best - find a way to win.

MassLive's Deputy Editor of Content Jim Pignatiello returns for Week 13:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I’m incredibly thankful to the New England sports fans who read and support MassLive’s outstanding sports department every day. We are pushed to deliver smarter analysis, deeper reporting and timely news to match the intensity of the region’s sports following.

Now, what should Patriots fans be thankful for this year? Here are four thoughts:

*Thank you to the Ryan Poles and Bears for (reportedly) laughing at Drake Maye’s film during prep for the 2024 NFL Draft and picking Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick, allowing Jayden Daniels to go No. 2 to Washington and, of course, Drake Maye to go to New England at No. 3.

We’ll see where all three QBs’ careers end up, but Patriots fans are pretty sure they got the best guy here with the No. 3 pick. Where have we heard that before?

*Thank you to the Tennessee Titans, who had one of the NFL’s best coaches in the league in Mike Vrabel and let him end up on the wrong side of a power struggle with GM Ran Carthon. So they fired Vrabel only to eventually fire both Carthon and Vrabel’s replacement, Brian Callahan.

Now Vrabel and the Patriots are 10-2 and currently the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoff picture while the Titans are 1-10 and have a great chance of “winning” the No. 1 draft pick for the second year in a row.

Great job, Titans! Patriots fans thank you for moving on from the current heavy favorite for NFL Coach of the Year!

*Thank you to Ann Michael Maye for the baking tips and her binge-worthy TikTok account. The comments (i.e. Make sure Drake doesn’t eat too much but also let him eat as much as he wants) are too good.

*Thank you to fate/the NFL schedule for having the Giants (2-10) on the Patriots’ calendar the week Vrabel and Company must reconfigure their offensive line following key injuries to rookies Will Campbell and Jared Wilson. This would be a dangerous game for the 10-2 Patriots against a team that hadn’t recently fired both its head coach and defensive coordinator.

Final score prediction: Patriots 30, Giants 24*

*A quick word of warning - I’m almost always wrong picking Patriots games (sorry if I jinxed the winning streak - that would be something NOT to be thankful for.)

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Given the injuries, which player can the Patriots least afford to lose outside of Drake Maye? -  Chris from Brookline

Guregian: My first thought and immediate answer is Christian Gonzalez. They're going to need him to shut down some top receivers down the stretch, and they really don't have a replacement.

You can have Carlton Davis take over, but who handles his job as the No. 2? You could also move Marcus Jones to the boundary, but that weakens the slot. So Gonzalez would be tough.

In thinking about it more, thanks to a lack of depth, there are so many other players who would qualify. Losing Hunter Henry would have a huge impact on Maye. Ditto Stefon Diggs.

With Jared Wilson hurt, and Ben Brown his replacement, the Patriots don't really have a backup center. So Garrett Bradbury can't get hurt.

Then there's linebacker Robert Spillane, who has been a tackling machine. Losing either edge rusher (K'Lavon Chaisson, Harold Landry) would also be trouble.

Bottom line: their lack of depth makes just about everyone someone they can't afford to lose across the board.
