No one expected the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to become a template for future big events in Las Vegas. But 40 years of success stands up as an iconic December event.
While National Finals Rodeo participants are wary of the equine herpes virus that has spread nationwide, only a handful of separate events were canceled.
With the exception of last season, Stetson Wright has been a runaway winner of the all-around cowboy competition that culminates at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Contrary to what its overwhelming success over the past four decades would suggest, it wasn’t always unanimous that the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and Las Vegas would become a match made in cowboy heaven.
The National Finals Rodeo begins Thursday at the Thomas & Mack Center and runs for 10 days. Here are five things to watch as the NFR celebrates 40 years in Las Vegas.
Hats by day, highballs by night: The spirit of the Wild West is alive and well at The Dustland Bar and Desert Bird Hat Co., two women-led local businesses where National Finals Rodeo fans can keep their style and their thirst in check when the bulls aren’t bucking.
