The Red Sox and Pirates, natural trade partners this offseason because of the former’s surplus of outfielders and the latter’s plenty of pitchers, consummated a deal Thursday.
Just not at the more obvious top tier.
The Sox acquired righthanded starting pitcher Johan Oviedo, further bolstering their rotation depth, and shipped outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia to Pittsburgh, the team announced.
The five-player swap also included the Red Sox receiving Tyler Samaniego, a lefthanded minor league reliever, and minor league catcher Adonys Guzman. They also sent righthanded pitching prospect Jesus Travieso to the Pirates.
