The very best vacuums

Four different vacuums pictured with crumbs on the floor.
Marki Williams/NYT Wirecutter

Fur, cereal, coffee grounds, mites, glitter, dust, hair, dander, kitty litter … there’s an underworld of grossness hiding on your floors and deep inside your carpets and rugs. Perhaps some of it has been unearthed this week as you’ve turned your house over to guests and gifts.

Only a powerful plug-in upright or canister vacuum (sorry, not a cordless) can take on all of the above. The best ones work on different types of floors, filter allergens and pollutants — and last for years.
