From international correspondent Jill Nelson: I enjoyed talking with Alex Zaytsev, a 32-year-old Ukrainian American pastor who ministers to teenagers in war-torn Ukraine. My husband and I raised five children—including two we adopted from Ukraine—so I could relate to the challenges he shared of teaching teenagers household skills and basic hygiene, including knowing when body spray has been overdone. At one point, Zaytsev had 20 teens under his care. |
|
His backstory is compelling as well. Zaytsev’s father completed his engineering studies at a university in eastern Ukraine in the early ’90s shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union, when Soviet influence still loomed large. Just before graduation, authorities summoned his father and told him he would need to renounce his Christian faith in order to receive his degree. He refused and instead took a job in a coal mine. As reforms stalled, the family decided to immigrate to the United States in 1998. Zaytsev later returned to Ukraine as a missionary and pastor in 2016. |

January 8, 1956: Missionaries Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, and Pete Fleming are killed by Ecuadorean Indians they sought to evangelize. The story of the missionaries and their deaths along the Curaray River was publicized by Elliot's widow, Elisabeth, in Through Gates of Splendor, published the following year. |

As we enter the holiday season, we consider how the places to which we belong shape us—and how we can be the face of welcome in a broken world. In this issue, you’ll read about how a monastery on Patmos offers quiet in a world of noise and, from Ann Voskamp, how God’s will is a place to find home. Read about modern missions terminology in our roundtable feature and about an astrophysicist’s thoughts on the Incarnation. Be sure to linger over Andy Olsen’s reported feature "An American Deportation" as we consider Christian responses to immigration policies. May we practice hospitality wherever we find ourselves. |
