Reminder: GSS and non-Marketplace Log Group Retention Deadline Approaching
SummaryOn February 1, 2026, an automated retention period of 30 days will be applied to all General Support System (GSS) and non-Marketplace log groups that do not have an associated retention period. This automation will run every 30 days on accounts that do not have the Marketplace label attached to ensure compliance with new retention periods identified by the new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) retention policy for logs held in Amazon Web Services (AWS) CloudWatch. This automated change will only apply to GSS and non-Marketplace log groups sent to Splunk which have the default log group retention set to "never expire." If you have previously set retention periods, your accounts and settings will not be impacted or changed by the automation. If you are a Marketplace application, this policy does not affect your accounts at this time and the automation will not examine your log groups until a later date. No log groups with an existing retention period set by Application Development Organizations (ADOs) will be changed or modified in any way. GSS and non-Marketplace ADOs must set a retention period in AWS CloudWatch on or before Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET to avoid potential data loss when the automation runs. The policies for CloudWatch and Splunk can be viewed on Cloud.CMS.Gov (CCG) and are linked below:
ActionAll ADOs and Application Teams have access to update retention groups for their specific logs in their account. If you have attempted to modify your retention parameters and have been denied, please open a ticket.
QuestionsIf you have questions, please reach out to your Hosting Coordinator. To find the assigned Hosting Coordinator supporting your application(s), visit this page on CCG.
