| As for the second topic, I was reminded what sharp readers we have. After I listed everything I could think of that Trump had added his name or face to and what others had tried to get those added to, I asked: What did I miss? Answer: A few really interesting ones, plus a new one that surfaced this week. - I’ll start with one that hits close to home, as a lifelong fan of the local NFL team. ESPN reported last fall that Trump wanted the Washington Commanders’ new stadium to bear his name when it’s built on the old RFK Stadium grounds. The Post reported that there have been “no formal conversations” about that scenario.
- The president in March revealed plans for the next-generation fighter jet, developed by Boeing. It would be called the F-47 — a nod to his status as the 47th president.
- Trump latched on to calling part of his foreign policy strategy the “Donroe Doctrine,” a twist on President James Monroe’s namesake claim of influence in the the Western Hemisphere.
- A stretch of Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach, Florida, near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, got a new ceremonial name this month: President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.
- The proposed triumphal arch across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial — similar in style to Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe in Paris — doesn’t have an official name. People online and in the media have jokingly called it the Arc de Trump, but — similar to the names for the proposed White House ballroom — that hasn’t come from the White House.
- And we got a new entry this week. During his surprise speech Tuesday in the White House briefing room, Trump bragged about changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico, but added, “I wanted to call it the Gulf of Trump.”
Finally, I pointed out early in that newsletter that I wasn’t going to address why the president does this, because I’m not qualified to do so. Many readers offered their own theories. But a handful pointed me to Trump’s visit to Mount Vernon with French President Emmanuel Macron in 2018. This was not quite midway through Trump’s first term. While touring George Washington’s Virginia estate on the Potomac River, Trump reportedly said: “If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it. You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.” What else to know Keep your questions coming.
