Good afternoon. It's Friday, Jan. 30.

In today's newsletter:

  • A proposal to criminalize undesirable behavior in public places has drawn both criticism and praise amid Anchorage's ongoing efforts to address concerns that parts of the city are unsafe or unwelcoming.

  • State officials and some education advocates are at odds over the legality of a new federal tax credit scholarship program that Gov. Mike Dunleavy said he signed Alaska on to earlier this week.

  • Alaska Native students from across Anchorage will line up Saturday to walk the runway and show off their mukluks, atikluks, qaspeqs and other culturally significant regalia as part of the school district's annual Indigenous Fashion Show.

The weather and roads are less than ideal, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy yourself this weekend around Anchorage. From festivals and shows on stage to the annual Ski for Women, check out our event highlights here.

Anchorage weather

It's overcast today with a high near 34 degrees, and there's a chance of both rain and snow showers. Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecast calls for a chance of freezing rain on Saturday, followed by mostly sunny skies on Sunday. Daytime highs will hover in the low to mid-30s.
