Lunar New Year celebrations are eight days away, and in my Chinese household, preparations are underway.
Also known as the Spring Festival, the 15-day celebration begins on February 17 and is rooted in family, joy and generations of superstition—which my family embraces wholeheartedly. We believe the way you welcome the new lunar calendar sets the tone for everything that follows. This year marks the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of optimism, strength and charging bravely ahead, and the energy is unmistakable. In the days leading up to the big day, homes are scrubbed to sweep away bad luck, red and gold decorations bloom across doorways, haircuts are booked for fresh starts and kitchens fill with foods meant to usher in abundance.
