It has been an unusually intense first week on the job for Joe Abouzeid, WPRI 12’s new vice president and general manager.
After months of speculation, Abouzeid was finally named this week as the successor to Pat Wholey at the CBS and Fox affiliate in Rhode Island, which is owned by Nexstar.
Instead of easing into the role, the first test he faced was the tragic shooting at a Pawtucket ice rink that left three people dead and three others wounded.
The bigger picture: A former news director at WPRI, Abouzeid returns with firsthand experience in how local television operates during moments of crisis.
His arrival also comes at a time when local television stations are being asked to do more with fewer resources, particularly during breaking news emergencies.
Abouzeid’s return to Rhode Island comes after stints leading WIVB in Buffalo, N.Y., and WDTN in Dayton, Ohio. He is also a former managing editor at WHDH Channel 7 in Boston.
He was the internal favorite to succeed Wholey, who left the station last October to run WDCW in Washington, D.C., another Nexstar station in the country’s eighth-largest television market.
Full disclosure: Globe Rhode Island has an editorial partnership with WPRI.
