Turning Budget Pressures Into Opportunities

According to an exclusive Chronicle survey of 275 administrators, more than 75 percent of respondents said they need to make some sort of changes to their budgets to be able to fulfill their mission.

While falling enrollments from the demographic cliff dominate much of the revenue-stream worry, financial officers are also stressed about the impact of cuts in state support, policies that make it harder for international students to enroll, changes to federal research grants, limits on financial-aid programs, and souring public opinion on higher education.

Despite these concerns, many institutions are adapting and pivoting.
