Behavior Change Campaign: It's Not A Race

Its Not A Race VZ

It’s not a race. 1 in 3 critical crashes in Arlington involves speeding. The faster you drive, the more likely you are to cause a crash and an injury to either yourself or someone else. Slower is safer for everyone. Learn how you can help.

ICYMI: Action Plan Update Meeting #2 with the External Stakeholders Recap

On Wednesday, January 28, County staff met with community representatives to gather feedback as we develop a first draft of the Vision Zero Five-Year Action Plan Update. Attendees included representatives from the Transportation Commission, Rosslyn BID, National Landing BID, WABA, Arlington Families for Safe Streets, Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Bicycle Advisory Committee, among others.

Key feedback included expanding the use of automated and in-person safety enforcement in locations where the data indicates a clear need and placing emphasis on quicker implementation of safety projects over the next five years. Other outstanding comments focused on speed reduction and behavior changes needs.

Downhill Bike Lane/Right Turn Conflict Pilot Update

bike pilot 2

The Downhill Bike Lane and Right Turn Conflict pilot tested the use of tactical materials and flex posts to slow drivers before turning right across a bike lane. The results demonstrated a 40% reduction in overall right turn vehicle speeds and increased perceived safety for people biking and scooting.

Due to the success of the pilot, this treatment has been integrated into the Vision Zero Multimodal Engineering Safety Toolbox, and the use of mini-speed humps and flex posts will be considered as typical quick-build tools to harden right turns across bike lanes and reduce the risk of a right hook vehicle-bike crash. Future applications will apply these treatments to locations that experience bike lane and right-turn conflicts, including at locations that do not have a downhill slope.

View the Data & Community Feedback Infosheet to learn more about pilot results. Updates on future installation of this safety treatment will be communicated on our Quick-Build project page. To view right turn hardening locations in Arlington on a map, visit the Vision Zero program dashboard.

Tactical Speed Hump Pilot Repairs Coming Soon

speed hump repair

Following the major snow events this winter, we have inventoried our tactical speed hump pilot locations and identified repair needs. We will be repairing the locations at the end of the season once the threat of snow events diminishes. Some of the humps will be repaired with tactical materials while others may be replaced with asphalt. Stay tuned to our newsletter for updates on the repairs and the tactical speed hump pilot in the coming months.

Vision Zero Presents to Arlington Neighborhood Village

drivers ed ppt

On Wednesday, January 21, Vision Zero staff met with members of Arlington Neighborhood Village for their Coffee & Conversation series. Staff presented on recent crash trends over the last few years that have involved older adults, and shared how the Vision Zero team identifies, addresses, and tracks safety improvements on Arlington roads. Towards the end of the meeting, staff presented a Drivers Ed Quiz which the attendees found informative and learned about some of the safety projects they have seen around in Arlington. Attendees had great questions and feedback for the quiz.

If you were unable to attend the meeting, but would like to view the meeting, you can find the meeting on the Arlington Neighborhood Village YouTube page.

Capital-Driven Safety Project Updates:

  • Columbia Pike Forward: Segment A
    • Crews are currently working on Segment A from S Orme St to S Joyce St. The project is divided into two segments: west from S Oak St to S Orme St, and east from S Orme St to interchange. On the west side, the project will widen sidewalks and add transit stations. On the east side, the project will realign Columbia Pike east of S Oak St, reconfigure the intersection of S Joyce St at the Columbia Pike/South Washington Boulevard Interchange, and add a new bike and pedestrian connector trail on the north side of Columbia Pike.
  • Columbia Pike Forward: Segment F
    • Crews wrapped up streetscape improvements and underground utility work.
  • Columbia Pike Forward: Sidewalk Repairs on Segment D
    • Crews have been conducting sidewalk quality assurance and repair work on Segment D - between South Garfield Street and South Courthouse Road. Expect short term lane closures during work hours to allow crews to access sidewalks safely. In cases where crews are working on the full width of a sidewalk, look out for detour signs to guide your path around the work site.
  • S Eads St Complete Street – 12th St S to Army Navy Dr
    • This project is anticipated to be completed in spring of 2026. The goals of this project are to realign traffic lanes to include two travel lanes and a turn lane in the center of the road, and parking lanes; add northbound dedicated bike lane with vertical protection; and add sidewalk and crosswalk improvements on east side of street.
  • South Walter Reed Drive Complete Street Project Update
    • Crews are working at the intersection of South Walter Reed Drive and 9th Street South. Crews have been busy rebuilding the west side of the intersection.
    • Starting the week of February 23rd, they will begin work on the northeast corner. Be alert for new traffic patterns on Walter Reed Dr for about two weeks, weather permitting.
