Weekend-Long Events

Sully Historic Site Tour Friday - Sunday, Times Vary Learn about the history and importance of Sully Historic Site in Chantilly. Explore the lives of the people who lived and worked at this site from the 1700s to the 1950s. This guided tour covers the housing of enslaved people, the 1794 Sully house, the kitchen, the laundry and other historic structures.

Friday, Feb. 27 Events

National Day of Reading (12:30 - 1 p.m.) Join us at the City of Fairfax Regional Library for a special National Day of Reading event featuring guest reader Fairfax Mayor Catherine Read. This program celebrates inclusive storytelling that supports transgender and non-binary youth. Families can enjoy making crafts and reading “Marley’s Pride” and “Chloe and the Fireflies.”

Child and Me Yoga (10:30 - 11 a.m.)

Breathe, move and relax through stories, songs and poses at Martha Washington Library in Alexandria. Please bring a yoga mat or beach towel. For children ages 1-4 with an adult.

French Conversation (1:30 - 3 p.m.)

Join us at the Oakton Library to learn and practice French conversation.

Bright Beats Inclusive Music Program (5 - 6 p.m.)

Enjoy sing-alongs, rhythm games and instrument play at the Dolley Madison Library in McLean. For children ages 3 and up.

Saturday, Feb. 28 Events

Grit and Grain - African American Millers (2 - 3 p.m.) African Americans' labor, experience and knowledge was crucial to 19th-century grist milling. Explore the historic Colvin Run Mill in Great Falls and learn about the contributions of African American millers in the county. Registration is $10.

Winter Bird Walk (10 - 11 a.m.)

Take a hike to listen and look for Ellanor C. Lawrence Park’s winter avian residents and migrants. Find out what birds do to survive the winter weather. Feel free to bring your own guides, binoculars and spotting scopes. Registration is $8.

Ramadan Storytime and Crafts (11 - 11:45 a.m.)

Enjoy stories, songs and rhymes at this interactive storytime at the Herndon Fortnightly Library. Make a craft to take home following the story.

Scavenger Hunt Adventure at the Lake (11 a.m. - noon)

Go on a nature scavenger hunt at Burke Lake Park. Look for different objects around the lake to collect a small prize. Registration is $8.

STEMM Explorers - A Fun-Filled STEM adventure (11 a.m. - noon)

Join us at Thomas Jefferson Library in Falls Church for a hands-on program designed to spark curiosity in science, technology, engineering and math. Kids will explore, build and learn through fun experiments and activities.

Snakes Secret Lives (1 - 2 p.m.)

Explore the adaptations and behaviors of snakes through hands-on encounters with non-venomous snakes at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield. Discover the hunting strategies, sensory capabilities and ecological roles that makes these reptiles masters of evolutionary design. Registration is $9.

Time Travel Club at Herndon Library (1 - 2 p.m.)

Travel back in time with us at the Herndon Fortnightly Library. Learn about ancient civilizations through a short lesson and trivia. Explore hands-on activities and crafts.

Self Defense Class (2 - 3:30 p.m.)

Learn how to be resilient in the face of danger in this workshop at Kings Park Library in Burke. We'll provide instruction and training time for physical techniques. Please dress comfortably for movement.

Fantasy Authors Event: Darby Cox and Salinee Goldenberg (3 - 4 p.m.)

Join us at Reston Regional Library for a conversation with high fantasy authors Darby Cox and Salinee Goldenberg. Books will be available for purchase.

Chinese Culture Club (4:30 - 5:30 p.m.)

Explore Chinese history, art, music and culture through a variety of activities at Dolley Madison Library in McLean. Activities will be in English and Chinese Mandarin. All Chinese language levels are welcome.

Sunday, March 1 Events

Hot Cocoa Wetland Night Hike (4:30 - 6 p.m.) Sip hot cocoa and join a naturalist for a special winter wetland tour after dark at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria. We will look for signs and listen for sounds of beavers, owls, deer and other nocturnal winter animals. Bring your own mug to help us reduce waste. Registration is $10.

Primitive Basics (10 - 11:30 a.m.)

Learn ancient techniques of starting a fire at Riverbend Park in Great Falls. Go on a short hike, learn how to identify plants and try your hand at archery with a primitive bow and arrow. Registration is $12.

Maple Syrup Boil Down (11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.)

Watch and learn as sap is boiled down into sweet syrup over an open fire at the Colvin Run Mill in Great Falls. Sample the combination of maple syrup over cornbread made from Colvin Run cornmeal. Registration is $8.

Public History: Who Tells the Story? (3 - 4:15 p.m.)

How do we choose what's remembered? Dr. John Schmitz will talk about how we teach history at George Mason Regional Library in Annandale. Schmitz's book, "Enemies Among Us: The Relocation, Internment and Repatriation of German, Italian, and Japanese Americans During the Second World War" will be available for sale after the discussion.
