Principal's Message |
Greetings Tiger Families!
As February comes to a close and we usher in March on Sunday, we welcome the opportunity to recognize Women’s History Month. During this month people throughout the United States will celebrate the history, contributions, and stories of impactful women like Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, pilot Amelia Earhart and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, who said “If you want to know you ask a question. There’s no such thing as a dumb question, its dumb if you don’t ask.” Recognizing that women’s history is a foundational part of our history as a country, and as a world, we certainly want to encourage our female students to take risks, ask questions, and explore their interests and passions – whether in art, aviation, or aerospace. Our students, both female and male, benefit from learning about the amazing contributions and stories of these famous women as well as every day female role models in their lives like their mothers, teachers, neighbors and mentors.
International Women’s Day has been observed for 50 years and falls on Sunday, March 8th. In celebration of this day, and the entire month, please consider engaging in conversations with your students about the impact of strong, talented, and brave women in our history, and in their lives. You can learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.
Thank you to all the women in the Twain community for the positive impact you make at home, in the neighborhood, and on the world! Please have a safe and restful weekend.
Sincerely,
Matt

Fentanyl With Teens
Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug, and what they can do to keep themselves and their communities safe.
Share these important facts with your child:
- Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
- More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in
10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
- Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
- Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.
Yesterday, we hosted a parent coffee related to preventing, recognizing, and addressing substance abuse in teens. Our Edison Pyramid Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS), Mr. Shawn Elliot (sbelliot@fcps.edu) shared great information with our families in attendance.

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast
Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.
This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback. Want to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.
Meal Kits for Fasting Students
Through Thursday, March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit.
-
Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
-
Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
-
Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.
Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and more information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.
Kingstowne Cup Tryouts!
If your child would like to participate in the Kingstowne Cup tryouts this year vs Hayfield, they will need an up to date physical on file from this past August on. This is a new requirement for our event as it is being grouped into the sports that FCPS is already running in the county. Please use this Physical form if your child would like to try out.
Girls Tryouts – Monday March 16th
Boys Tryouts – Wednesday March 18th
Thank you for your support and please Contact Dominic Amato, Twain’s After School Specialist at dfamato@fcps.edu or 703-313-3760 if you have any questions
AVID 8 University of Richmond Transportation Fundraiser
A tenet of the AVID program is to create an environment where students engage in authentic experiences leading to college readiness. A college visit in middle school prepares students for academic planning in high school and informs them about resources like financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Stepping onto a college campus helps our middle schoolers visualize their future as college students—a goal for all our Twain AVID scholars!
Twain’s AVID 8 students were invited to visit the University of Richmond this April, but we need help fundraising for a charter bus. We are looking to raise up to $2000 to cover the cost of transportation. Donations can be through MySchoolBucks. We appreciate any help you can provide! If you have questions about this fundraiser, please contact Kate Balderston at kebalderston@fcps.edu.
