Dear Cherry Run Families,
What a wonderful week we’ve had at school! It has been such a joy to see our students engaged in their learning, supporting one another, and bringing positive energy into every classroom. From thoughtful discussions to creative projects and strong teamwork, our students continue to make us proud each and every day.
We’ve also been especially grateful for the warm and sunny weather. Students have been thrilled to get outside for recess, enjoying fresh air, active play, and time to connect with friends. Laughter across the playground is always one of the best sounds of the school day!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are creating a caring and vibrant school community where our students can learn, grow, and thrive.
Wishing you a relaxing weekend ahead!
Sincerely,
Maura Donahue and Miranda Goss

Introducing Amy Reed
Starting in March, Mrs. Amy Reed will be filling in for Mrs. Miranda Goss for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year while she is out on maternity leave.
Mrs. Reed is a proud graduate of Fairfax County Public Schools. She grew up in Mount Vernon and now lives nearby in West Springfield. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education (PK–3) and a Master’s in Education (PK–6) from Old Dominion University. She also earned an endorsement in Leadership and Administration through George Mason University.
With 21 years of dedicated service in FCPS, Mrs. Reed brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to student success. She has served as a classroom teacher in both upper and lower grades, grade-level team lead, Summer Learning Site Director, and most recently as an acting assistant principal. She has supported learners from PreK through Sixth grade across the division’s continuum of services, including Special Education, Advanced Academics, Immersion, Multilingual Learners, and Young Scholars. Mrs. Reed champions a whole-child approach, addressing each student’s academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs to foster meaningful growth.
Mrs. Reed is also a proud mother of two FCPS students—an 8th grader and a 10th grader in West Springfield’s Region 4. At home, she stays busy with her two “COVID puppies,” Penny (a pug/Boston terrier mix) and Moose (a puggle). She is especially passionate about cultivating meaningful relationships and fostering a strong sense of community. An enthusiastic lifelong learner, Mrs. Reed believes that collaboration among educators, students, and families is essential to student success and a vibrant school culture.
She looks forward to supporting Cherry Run’s Cardinals for the remainder of the school year!

We recognize that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.
There’s also an easy-to-follow five-step process outlined for registering your child for kindergarten.
Register your child today! Contact our registrar, Yasmin Naldo, at 703-923-2800 or ymnaldo@fcps.edu with any questions.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Cherry Run Elementary
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. If you would like your student to opt-out, please contact Katy Harvey at ksharvey@fcps.edu.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
School Breakfast Week
Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast
Multiple studies show that school breakfast is important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Also, students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.
This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? View Nutrition Services’ printable menus.
Pre-K and Early Head Start
Pre-K and Early Head Start Programs
FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, living in Fairfax County.
- Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
- Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.
Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications are accepted online, by email, by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.
If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).
