Gunston Gazette
Letter from the Principals
Dear Gunston ES Community,
With a full heart, I am writing to share that I will be leaving Gunston Elementary School, as I have accepted an opportunity to serve at a school closer to home. My last day at Gunston will be March 6th. This decision was made with careful thought, as my time at Gunston has been both professionally and personally meaningful.
Serving as your assistant principal has been an incredible honor. Gunston has strengthened my leadership, deepened my understanding of instructional excellence, and reinforced my commitment to building a positive, student-centered school culture. The foundation I have gained here will guide my work moving forward, and I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me as a leader.
I am proud to have been a Gunston Eagle. Thank you for your trust, partnership, and dedication to our students. It has been a privilege to be part of such an exceptional community, and I will always value the relationships and lessons from my time at Gunston.
With Gratitude,
Ashley Nelson

New Visitor Management System
New Visitor Management System
We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry. For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!
Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.
Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.
If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible. Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Monday, March 23rd from 4:30PM - 6:30pm. More details forthcoming!
FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.

School Breakfast Week
- Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast
Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.
This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.
 Pre-K and Early Head Start

- Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.
Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible; space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Transition Fair for Students in Special Education
Planning for Life in and After High School for Students with IEPs

The transition fair will take place on Wednesday, March 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Luther Jackson Middle School.
Ensuring the success of our students with disabilities after high school is dependent on what is known as transition planning. Please join CTS and other support service personnel for an evening focused on planning for the future.

This event also includes a presentation with a brief overview of transition services and a student/parent panel sharing firsthand experiences. Register in advance.
