RVES News and Notes - February 27

February 27 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

We kicked off the week with an unexpected snow day on Monday. While many students enjoyed the surprise break, we are hoping the snow is behind us and that warmer days are on the way.

Even with a shorter week, our students jumped right back into learning on Tuesday. Classrooms were filled with hands on activities, creative exploration, engaging lessons, and plenty of energy. Indoor recess brought its own kind of fun, and our teachers made the most of every moment to keep students learning, collaborating, and growing.

Have a great weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal

Read Across America

March 2 - 6

Read Across America Week is next week! Students will be participating in fun reading activities all week long, including our book exchange, where students get “new” books (thank you for your donations!) and our annual Reading Swap, where students can choose any teacher in the school to hear a story from. To get in the spirit, there is also an optional spirit week to celebrate the fun of reading! Happy reading!

Code-Up in Action!

Our students brought math and engineering to life as they used Keeva planks during math. Working in teams, they designed and built block structures, carefully measuring to determine which tower stood tallest. Students compared results, analyzed differences from tallest to shortest, and discussed how design choices impacted stability and height.

Throughout the challenge, they applied the engineering design process by asking thoughtful questions, imagining possibilities, sketching their ideas, putting their plans into action, and revising their designs based on results. The room was filled with problem solving, collaboration, and rich academic conversation as students learned that every redesign brings them closer to success.

NEW VISITOR CHECK-IN SYSTEM

Live Now

Welcome to Raptor! Please download the RaptorSafe App to your mobile phone so that you can quickly sign-in as a visitor or volunteer to OHES. Look for these signs to scan the QR code or search for Raptor Safe in your mobile phone app store. You do not need a school code when completing registration.

While you may still use your government issued IDs, the Mobile App is quick and easy - and the preferred method for most visitors.

The new Raptor system replaces the old ScholarChip and is faster and more efficient.

The OHES office staff will be happy to assist you in getting sign-in to the new system should you have any questions.

We are excited to begin using the new RaptorSafe system to keep our building safe knowing who is visiting.

Child care and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

Meal Kits for Fasting Students

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit.

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.
