A Lion's Tale

Counts

Greetings Laurel Ridge Families,

Happy Friday! It has been another wonderful, high-energy week here at Laurel Ridge. We have some truly spectacular news to share that highlights the incredible talent within our halls. Please join me in a massive Lion’s Roar of congratulations for Mrs. Mary Kowalski, who has been named the Robinson Pyramid Outstanding Elementary Teacher, and Mr. Amofa Agyekum, our Robinson Pyramid Outstanding Operational Employee! We are so excited to showcase their dedication and are deeply grateful for the heart and hard work they contribute to our community every single day. They truly embody the spirit of excellence that makes our school such a special place to learn and grow.

Don’t forget to attend the PTA’s Passport to the World event this evening! It is a beautiful opportunity for our Lions to travel the globe without leaving the gym, celebrating the rich diversity and cultures that make our school community so vibrant. This spirit of discovery leads us perfectly into next week as we celebrate Read Across America Week with themed spirit days and fun activities! To keep the momentum going, try a Reading Picnic at home—simply grab a blanket, some snacks, and your favorite books for a cozy, screen-free reading session on the living room floor.  Drumroll, please!  On Monday, the PTA will officially kick off our annual Every Lion, One Book event! The secret book title will be revealed Monday morning, and we can’t wait for our entire community to be reading the same story together at home.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Treatment and Prevention of Lice

 What are head lice?

Head lice (or Pediculosis humanus capitis) are small, wingless parasitic insects about the size of a sesame seed that feed on blood on the human scalp. Head lice are very quick and use a hook-like claw to stay attached to the hair.

Who gets head lice?

ANYONE can get head lice! It is most common in pre-school and elementary school-aged children (ages 3-12) and females. Kids are much more likely to get lice from family members and playmates than from classmates at school.

Parents or guardians have an important role in treating the lice and from preventing the lice from coming back. See the Fairfax County Health Department brochure for a description of what parents need to know about lice. The brochure is available in the following languages:  ArabicEnglishChineseFarsiKoreanSpanishUrdu, and Vietnamese.

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfast is important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Also, students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

pre-K

Pre-K and Early Head Start Programs

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, living in Fairfax County.

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted online, by email, by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.

If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).
