Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of the 3rd quarter, we want to provide an update regarding student parking. We currently have fewer than 50 parking passes available for the remainder of the school year.

If your student plans to drive to school, please register and complete your payment as soon as possible to ensure they secure a spot. Once these remaining passes are sold, we will be at full capacity.

If you have any questions, please reach out to our Safety & Security team.

Thank you for your continued support!

Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings SoCo families,

Before diving into this week’s updates, I want to pause and share a moment that perfectly captures what makes South County so extraordinary. This weekend, I’m attending a national student leadership conference alongside a small group of our SoCo students. As we prepared for a presentation together, I met with Bella Stephens and Andrew Grane, and I left that conversation absolutely inspired. Their insight, confidence, creativity, and genuine care for others reminded me that our students are not just participants in their education; they are leaders and difference-makers. Moments like this reaffirm what we already know: the heart of SoCo is our students, and they continue to raise the bar with their character and spirit.

Now, on to this week’s reflections!

Student and Staff Belonging

Voices of Our Stallions

We’re excited to host our upcoming Parent Advisory Council meeting on March 18 at 5:00 p.m. and our Principal’s Student Advisory Council meeting that same day at 10:15 a.m. These gatherings are more than meetings; they are opportunities to directly shape the Stallion experience. Your voice, ideas, and perspective truly influence the culture we build together at SoCo.

Parents, I encourage you to sign up in advance and join us. Your partnership makes our school stronger. Students can sign up via the QR codes posted in the cafeteria to reserve their spots and represent classmates. When families and students step forward to lead, our entire community grows stronger.

Center Stage and Stallion Strong

This past Saturday, our phenomenal Theater students delivered a powerful performance of Madea at the Occoquan Region competition, showcasing extraordinary talent, discipline, and heart. Although we will not be advancing, their work was nothing short of exceptional, a reflection of countless rehearsals and a deep commitment to excellence. On that stage, they were like a stallion in full stride, bold, fearless, and impossible to ignore, reminding everyone that true greatness is measured not by trophies, but by the courage to run with everything you have.

Making Waves at States

Congratulations to our outstanding Swim and Dive State place winners for representing SoCo with excellence and determination. Savannah Harris and Anna Helms powered their way to an impressive 7th-place finish, while our Girls 200M and 400M Relay teams raced to 8th in the state.  This is an extraordinary accomplishment at this elite level of competition! We are incredibly proud of their grit, teamwork, and Stallion spirit as they continue to raise the standard and make waves across Virginia.

Double Crowned: A Historic Night for Stallion Basketball

Last Friday night marked a milestone moment for SoCo as both our Girls and Boys Basketball teams captured the Patriot District Basketball Championships, the first time in school history that both programs have claimed district titles in the same year! The energy at the games was electric, and our Stallions moved across the court like lightning: fast, fierce, and impossible to stop. This unprecedented achievement speaks to months of discipline, teamwork, and belief in one another.

Congratulations also go out to Coach Rudy Coffield for being named Patriot District Girls Basketball Coach of the Year and to senior Laila Tull for earning Patriot District Girls Basketball Player of the Year honors. both richly deserved recognitions of excellence. We could not be prouder of how these teams represented SoCo, making history together and setting a new gold standard for Stallion basketball.

High Quality Instruction

Scaffolding Success: High-Impact Strategies in Action

In Mr. Mason’s AP African American Studies class, students engaged deeply with the Great Migration through a multi-disciplinary lesson that integrated literature, art, history, and music. He effectively used the "I Do, We Do, You Do" model to scaffold learning, moving from direct instruction to collaborative analysis and culminating in student choice for application. Students benefited from multiple exposures to content: visual, auditory, and text based. These strategies reinforced understanding and promoted critical thinking through routines like “I see, I think, I wonder.” Additionally, offering flexible options for demonstrating learning, incorporating movement breaks, and structuring collaborative teamwork created a highly engaging, culturally responsive, and student-centered classroom environment. We are very fortunate to have such a talented expert as Mr. Mason working with our ultra-engaged students!

School Culture

Students vs. Staff: The SoCo Showdown

Get ready, Stallions: the excitement is building for our first-ever Student vs. Staff Basketball Game on March 17, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m.! The night will be packed with school spirit, energy, and friendly rivalry, starting with our amazing Inclusive Learning Program students showing off their talents, followed by an exciting student vs. parent quarter where families get to jump into the action. The second half features two high-octane quarters of students taking on staff in a showdown you won’t want to miss, with every segment energized by spirited cheer squads, including some of our most enthusiastic faculty. This is a perfect opportunity for our Stallion community to come together, cheer loudly, and celebrate the talent, teamwork, and pride that make SoCo so special. Grab your friends and family, wear your Stallion colors, and join us for a night of fun and unforgettable memories!

Celebrating 20 Years of Stallion Excellence

This week, we were honored to celebrate a major milestone: 20 incredible years of South County High School! A heartfelt thank you to School Board member Mateo Dunne for presenting a Proclamation recognizing this special anniversary, and to Mt. Vernon District Supervisor Dan Stork for delivering a Resolution commemorating two decades of Stallion pride, achievement, and community. Their support highlights the strong partnerships that have helped shape our school and the lasting impact of our students, staff, and families. We are grateful for their recognition and thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our SoCo community!

After the presentations, our phenomenal SoCo middle and high school bands took the stage and delivered truly spectacular performances that filled the room with pride and Cougar spirit. Each note reflected extraordinary talent, unwavering dedication, and the vibrant heartbeat of our school community. If that unforgettable evening was any indication, both our present and our future sound brilliant!

Coach's Corner

Our high-quality instruction includes developing strong presentation skills, helping students communicate their ideas clearly and confidently. At home, you can support this by encouraging your child to practice speaking in front of family members, whether it's sharing about their day or practicing a school presentation. Providing constructive feedback in a supportive environment builds confidence and enhances their communication ability.

As we close out this week, we are reminded that for 20 years we have been Standing Strong: in our classrooms, on our fields and courts, on our stages, and in every club and activity that brings our students together. From academic excellence to athletic grit, from musical brilliance to spirited involvement, SoCo continues to shine in every arena. Here’s to two decades of pride, perseverance, and to the many strong years still ahead!
