At Christianity Today this week, pastor Luke Geraty reviewed theologian Craig Keener’s new book, Suffering: Its Meaning for the Spirit-Filled Life. Geraty praises Keener’s work, particularly its theological depth and its reminders that pain in our own lives can be opportunities to enter into the sufferings of Christ. |
|
"When we experience everyday hardships, we have a chance to cherish Jesus above all else and base our hope not on circumstances but on the assurance that our names are written in the Book of Life (Rev. 3:5)," Geraty writes. |
|
"When we suffer, we might wonder what the connection is between suffering and spiritual warfare. Is all suffering simply an attack from demonic forces, or is it more complex?" he continues. "As we read the New Testament, especially Paul’s statement in Ephesians 6:12, we discover that we are in a clash of kingdoms and that suffering often results from spiritual opposition. Yet whether suffering is a result of the Fall or of spiritual attack, it is an avenue where followers of Jesus can gain a greater sense of intimacy with God as we share in the ‘fellowship of his sufferings’ (Phil. 3:10, KJV). When we suffer, we remember Christ, who suffered for us." |

Elise Brandon, copy editor: This recipe for zucchini bread. I made it without the walnuts, and it was delicious. Perfect with a cup of tea. |

Haley Byrd Wilt, interim editor (while the wonderful Kate Lucky is on maternity leave): I recently shared this lovely Søren Kierkegaard discourse with a friend who is battling cancer. It also makes a powerful devotional during Lent. |

When Jesus taught, he used parables. The kingdom of God is like yeast, a net, a pearl. Then and today, to grasp wisdom and spiritual insight, we need the concrete. We need stories. In this issue of Christianity Today, we focus on testimony—the stories we tell, hear, and proclaim about God’s redemptive work in the world. Testimony is a personal application of the Good News. You’ll read Marvin Olasky’s testimony from Communism to Christ, Jen Wilkin’s call to biblical literacy, and a profile on the friendship between theologian Miroslav Volf and poet Christian Wiman. In an essay on pickleball, David Zahl reminds us that play is also a testament to God’s grace. As you read, we hope you’ll apply the truths of the gospel in your own life, church, and neighborhood. May your life be a testimony to the reality of God’s kingdom. |
